Helping others is a source of joy and strength in our lives. |
There are a lot of people in this world, but not one of them is exactly like you.
We are all unique, so it can be hard to put ourselves into someone else's shoes, or to understand what they are going through in their own version of life.
But we can be compassionate and helpful to our family, friends and people in our community, as well as to those we have never met or seen. We can treat the feelings and well-being of others as important.
The manner of compassion and help you give others is completely up to you. Only you know what skills, aptitudes and resources are at your command, and only you can know the moment to help someone.
The trick is to keep your eyes and ears open, and to understand that when we help each other life becomes better for both.
Despite what the marketing machines tell you, life is far more joyous when it is focused on people, rather than things.
If I had only one thing, I would take a smile over an iPad.
In addition to helping people already in your life, every community has caring people sharing their efforts in organizations that help others. Some specialize in helping street people, or teens, feeding the hungry, or caring for the elderly.
Local food banks, churches and youth organizations are always looking for helping hands and hearts. You will be welcomed.
As with all types of helping, some involve working directly with people, while others are behind the scenes, cooking, packing or organizing. You can definitely find a satisfying way to help.
As for organizations I support, I have a heart for street youth and those suffering from injustice. So I am a fan of The Salvation Army (US, Canada), Youth for Christ (US, London, Canada), and the International Justice Mission (US, Canada).
There are lots of people to help, and lots of ways to do it.
Be the helping hand, and your heart will find joy.
